The collection of data represents the foundation for orchestrating and optimizing processes, systems and objects. However, data by itself is not helpful - it is all about turning them into Smart Information. This means, ways have to be found to provide information to the right people or machines, which offer real added value and lead to profitable or efficiency- increasing actions. In order to enable employees to harvest the benefits of these highly qualified information, the qualification of employees in terms of data handling is crucial.

Data usage does not stop at the company’s boundary, the entire ecosystem has to be involved, for e.g. integrating relationships between logistics networks to suppliers, partner companies and sales service providers into the efforts for optimization. If this does not happen, parts of all gained improvements will evaporate and full potential is never reached.

From Big Data to IoT-platforms

Massive amounts of data, generated by Big Data, completely overwhelms relational data banks which are still frequently used today. Data bank operators therefore do only get an insufficient overview of their data universe. The transition to IoT-platforms is an unavoidable requirement for the usage of Smart Information, Smart Services and new insights for increased efficiency in the Supply Chain. IoT- platforms are extremely powerful data banks, applied e.g. by the social networks such as LinkedIn which processes data volumes of around 100 terabytes - per day.
